In June 2010, management, clients and guests celebrated RTT’s auspicious 30th Birthday at a Black Tie affair in the Sandton Convention Centre ballroom.

The Railit Zozo hut from 1980 was the centre of attraction in reception with the sounds of a roving saxophonist providing a musical interlude during guest registration. This was followed by the Diski dancers’ World Cup Soccer routine heralding the opening of the function.

The doors opened and guests took their seats to be greeted by tantalising starters. The house lights dimmed and the show began with the original founder and RTT Chairman Tim Edwards’s address in the form of a Monty Python style video production leaping back in time to the 80’s. Filmed from the sanctity of the Railit Zozo hut, Tim entertained guests reminiscing via the “Money for Nothing” soundtrack which ended on a stunning aerial view of the new RTT facility. The spotlight then focussed on the podium where Dr Iain Barton welcomed guests and paid tribute to RTT’s 30 years of achievements.

Glasses refilled, the main course was served during which guests were treated to the internationally acclaimed talent of CODA – a group of three beautiful and talented ladies delivering superb unplugged musical compilations tastefully in synch with the choice of dishes served.

The bold RTT Red Black and White “Lets Party” theme, tastefully incorporated in the table settings, décor and furnishings, permeated the room with a warm ambience. The menu was specifically selected and designed to appeal to each and every guests palate, accompanied by a special selection of wines from leading Cape estates.

Lady Gaga’s dancers and their accompanying aerial act upped the pace with their rendition of Poker Face and set the scene for Mango Groove to lift the party. Guest’s tongues tripped over a selection of creative chocolate, chilli and cheese desserts. The Port and Cognac lounge added the finishing touch and a sugar boost to increase energy reserves.

The Disc Jockey’s playlist included an array of musical hits from the 80’s and heralded in Mango Groove’s main performance. Clare Johnson had everyone crammed onto the dance floor. RTT’s 1994 video - Radar Love - was screened during the DJ’s last set and fond memories of the last 30 years brought a tear to many guests' eyes.
“RTT’s 30th birthday was certainly a night to remember.”
